GIVING BACK TO PHI PSI:

TIME, TREASURE, AND TALENT

There are so many ways alumni, family, and friends can support the Phi Psi Foundation by sharing their time, treasure, and talent to give back to the Fraternity that had such a lasting impact in their lives. Phi Psi alumni can give a gift on Founders Day to support their chapter’s awards programs; they can decide to create a named endowment to support Phi Psi undergraduates across the country; or Phi Psi alumni, friends, and family can serve as scholarship reviewers for the National Scholarship program to help decide which of the many deserving brothers receives a scholarship for the 2025-26 academic year. As a National Scholarship Reviewer, you learn about the many inspiring brothers across the Phi Psi nation, brothers like Luke Werthmann Iowa State ’21.

Luke Werthmann is a Senior Engineering Major at Iowa State University and the 2024-25 Bill and Lindy Good Scholarship recipient.  Werthmann, a stellar student with a 3.42 GPA, is studying to work in the aerodynamics engineering field once he graduates from ISU as well as pursuing his MBA and private pilots’ license.  As a sophomore, Werthmann worked as a research fellow through Boeing, and this past summer, he worked as a systems engineering co-op with Collins Aerospace, where he plans to rejoin after graduation.

Werthmann makes time in his busy academic schedule to serve both Phi Psi and his community.  He is the past Iowa Beta Chapter President and Fraternity Educator.  Werthmann volunteers with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and in his role as Philanthropy Co-Chair, facilitated a fundraiser with the Chapter and Make-A-Wish Iowa to fully fund a child’s wish.  “I wanted to deviate from the norm of most fraternities and sororities and start a fundraising campaign to sponsor a child’s wish through Make-A-Wish Iowa, rather than just hosting a single philanthropy event. I wanted to give guys an opportunity to see how their work could truly impact another’s life and make it personal for them.”

Werthmann believes that joining Phi Kappa Psi has been a life-changing experience.  “It instantly stood out to me as a place where I felt like I belonged, and joining has been one of the best decisions of my life. From the very beginning, I could feel that Iowa Beta had a culture in which its members would push one another to develop into true leaders with outstanding character and morals, all while being held to an exceptional academic standard.”

As he moves closer and closer to becoming an alumnus, Werthmann has a plan for staying involved with the Phi Kappa Psi simply to show gratitude for the many lessons and the impact it has had on his life in the past four years, “I can’t put a price on how significantly this chapter has impacted my life. It has played a fundamental role in the development of my values, morals, and character, and I am truly proud of the man my brothers have helped shape me into. The Fraternity has given me a better second family than I could’ve ever imagined. While the thought of my brothers and I graduating saddens me, I feel privileged to have had such an incredible college journey, and I owe it all to Iowa Beta.”
