National Suicide Prevention Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month and as it comes to a close, we want to take a few moments to reflect on those who have been affected by suicide and think about what we can do every day to help those in need.

National Suicide Prevention Month is championed by many different organizations including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, the National Institute of Mental Health and many more organizations.

The National Alliance on Mental Health says this month is “…a time to raise awareness on this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. In addition to shifting public perception, we use this month to spread hope and vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.”

Here at Phi Psi, we are dedicated to mental health awareness and advocacy. Phi Psi is built upon caring for others and it is our duty as brothers to help one another in times of need.

Below is a list of resources available to help identify a crisis, how to intervene, and information for those who may need help. Mental health conditions can affect anyone regardless of gender, age, race or socioeconomic class.

If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call 911 immediately.

If you are in crisis or are experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255)

If you’re uncomfortable talking on the phone, you can also text NAMI to 741-741 to be connected to a free, trained crisis counselor on the Crisis Text Line.
